Artist Statement

As an aspiring medical illustrator, my work centers around the observational recording of my surroundings.  Although I specialize in naturalistic depiction, I’ve expanded my practice towards the abstraction of natural sciences to further explore themes of environmental interconnectivity between cognitive and non-cognitive beings.

Still, my recent work has been geared towards the rupture of my identity as a born and raised Puerto Rican woman after moving to Richmond, Virginia. Whether it’s drawing, sculpture, painting or time-based media, I attempt to embody the disconnect between myself and Puerto Rican culture.  I’ve experienced an Americanization that expands just enough to isolate me from my cultural roots, but not enough to be considered a homogenous individual in the American South.  My work serves as a mirror: I stare at the reflection of my cultural dissonance and how it directly displays my sufferings with inauthenticity and security while grasping at the transient memories that attempt to fortify my crumbling connection with the island.
